New research from IDP Education shows how international students are choosing their destination as visa rules keep changing. The Emerging Futures survey asked 4,800 students in 106 countries between 18 August and 16 September 2026. Six in ten respondents were postgraduates.

Students keep their options open

Three quarters of students (76%) are considering more than one country, and 36% are looking at three or more. Nearly half of applicants (47%) checked their visa approval chances while building their shortlist, not after choosing a university.

Where students look for information

University websites remain the most used source (60%), followed by rankings (46%) and course comparison sites (42%). When it comes to the final decision, agents and friends or family are the most influential people (37%).

A closer race between destinations

Australia is still the most popular first choice, but its share fell from 31% in May to 24% in October 2026. It is now only three points ahead of both the UK and the US. Australia remains the most considered destination (54%) and is rated best for post-study work and graduate jobs.
