UK to Open Its High Potential Visa to Graduates of the World's Top 150 Universities

The UK plans to widen the High Potential Individual visa from graduates of the top 80 universities to the top 150, and to raise its yearly cap of 8,000 applications.

The UK wants more graduates of leading universities around the world. According to The PIE News, plans announced in last week's UK Budget will expand the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa and raise its annual cap.

What is changing

  • More universities: the visa will be open to graduates of the world's top 150 institutions, up from 80 today.
  • A higher cap: the route is currently capped at 8,000 applications a year. The cap will be increased, but no new figure has been given.

Today the eligible institutions are those on the Global Universities List: non-UK universities ranked in the top 100 of at least two of the Times Higher Education, QS and ARWU rankings. It is not yet clear which universities will be added. A Home Office spokesperson said further details will be set out in due course.

How the HPI visa works

The HPI visa lets recent graduates of these universities live and work in the UK without a job offer or a sponsor. It lasts two years, or three years for PhD graduates. Unlike the Graduate visa, it is aimed at people who studied at a top-ranked university outside the UK.

Why it matters

For international students the change is a reminder that where you study shapes what comes after. A degree from a highly ranked university can open work routes in other countries, not only where you graduated. Wider eligibility also means more graduates from more countries could qualify once the new list is published.

Key points

  • The HPI visa is set to cover graduates of the top 150 universities, up from 80.
  • The yearly cap of 8,000 applications will rise; no new figure yet.
  • No job offer or sponsor needed; two years, or three for PhD graduates.
  • The new university list and start date have not been published.
