Medicine is one of the most popular fields for international students in Georgia, and in October Tbilisi hosted a two-day international conference on how it is taught. ECCES 2026 carried the theme "Advancing Medical Education: Internationalisation, Innovation and Academic Success".
Who took part
Minister of Education, Science and Youth Givi Mikanadze and Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze attended the opening. The rector of Ken Walker International University, Eka Ekaladze, and the rector of Tbilisi State Medical University, Irakli Natroshvili, gave welcome speeches. The conference also honoured the 90th birthday of Dr Ken Walker, Professor of Medicine and Neurology at Emory University, and brought together Emory professors, international and local experts, university leaders, teachers, researchers and students.
The programme included keynote talks, panels, scientific presentations, a student research exhibition, workshops and clinical master classes.
International recognition
In his speech the minister recalled that in 2018 Georgia's National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement received ten-year recognition from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), which he described as important for the international mobility of graduates.
Why it matters
Events like this keep Georgian medical schools in contact with international practice and show the attention the government gives to medical education, a key reason many foreign students choose Georgia.
