Georgia and the British Council Work on a Roadmap for UK Degrees in Georgia

Georgia's education ministry and quality agency met British Council leaders to discuss transnational education: UK–Georgian university partnerships and a quality framework for them.

Transnational education (TNE), where students earn a foreign university's qualification without leaving their own country, was the main topic of two meetings between Georgian officials and the British Council in October 2026.

Meeting at the ministry

On 7 October Georgia's Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, hosted Kate Ewart-Biggs, Deputy Chief Executive of the British Council, and Sharmian Lever, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Georgia. They discussed English language teaching, teacher development, the internationalisation of higher education and, above all, TNE and partnerships between Georgian and UK universities. Both sides praised the ongoing "Future English" project.

A roadmap and a quality framework

Georgia's National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (NCEQE), which authorises universities and accredits programmes, reported on 20 October that its director, Lasha Margishvili, met the British Council delegation. The talks focused on a roadmap for TNE and on building a national quality-assurance framework for it. NCEQE also recalled its Memorandum of Understanding with the UK's Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and Georgia's part in the Going Global 2026 conference.

What is not known yet

Neither announcement names UK universities, programmes, start dates or fees. The work is at the planning stage, so new joint degrees will come later and step by step.
