How studying in Georgia works

From choosing a program to your first week in Tbilisi. Georgian universities admit international students without national exams, through a recognition process run by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (NCEQE) and the Ministry of Education.

Step by step

Choose a program

Pick a university and an English-taught program. Compare tuition, duration and intake dates in our program list.

Send your documents

Usually your passport, school certificate with transcript (or Bachelor’s diploma for a Master’s), a 3×4 photo and an English certificate if you have one. Some universities also ask for a CV, motivation letter or video.

Translation and notarization

Most universities need your documents translated into Georgian and notarized. Our team does this locally in Georgia.

Interview and English check

A short online interview, and an internal English test if you have no certificate (most universities ask for B2, IELTS 5.5–6.0 or TOEFL equivalent).

Recognition and approval

The university submits your documents to NCEQE. The Ministry of Education makes the final decision. This takes from about 5 days to 1 month (the University of Georgia quotes 3–4 weeks).

Tuition and invitation letter

After approval you pay the tuition (in full or the first part, depending on the university) and receive the enrollment confirmation and invitation letter for your visa.

Study visa and residence permit

D3 study visa

Students who need a visa apply for the D3 immigration visa for studying in Georgia. Citizens of visa-exempt countries (for example the EU, USA, UAE, Israel and Turkey) may enter Georgia visa-free for up to one year.

Usually needed for the visa:

  • Visa application form and fee receipt
  • Passport and photo
  • Proof of finances
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Travel insurance
  • Invitation and acceptance letters from the university

Residence permit after arrival

Apply for a residence permit before your legal stay expires. You will typically need your passport, a photo, your visa documents, proof of finances and your university documents.

Visa processing takes up to about 4 weeks. If your visa is refused, all partner universities refund the tuition you paid once you show official proof.
